Osibisa

 

 Osibisa are a British Afro-pop band, founded in London in 1969 by four expatriate African and three Caribbean musicians. Osibisa were one of the first African-heritage bands to become widely popular and linked with the world music description.

                                          

Sounds of Blackness

Sounds of Blackness is a Grammy Award-winning vocal and instrumental ensemble from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota who perform music from several genres music including gospel, R&B, soul, and jazz.^[1] The group scored several hits on the Billboard R&B chart and Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the 1990s. Cynthia Johnson of Lipps Inc. fame and Grammy winner Ann Nesby are the group's most prominent alumni.

 

  The group was founded in 1969 by Russell Knighton at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the group was called the Macalester College Black Voices. It was in 1971 when current director Gary Hines took leadership over the ensemble, and the group name was officially changed to Sounds of Blackness (SOB). The group had acquired local celebrity status throughout the years though never signed with a record company because of various reasons including the fact that many companies were not comfortable with the group's name

  

 

 

 

 

Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway, cantante de urban y neo soul nacida en Chicago (Illinois). Es hija del cantante de soul Donny Hathaway. Debutó en 1990 con un álbum homónimo, en el que las baladas urban ocupaban un gran lugar. Su música funde raíces del jazz, el gospel e incluso el rock más ligero. Durante la década de los '90 hizo distintos shows de jazz en la Black Entertainment Television (BET). Tras una década de descanso, apareció en 2004 con el álbum "Outrun the sky".

 

 

 

 

Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu  Nació en Dallas, Texas. Creció escuchando el soul de los '70 y comenzó a vivir el hip hop de los '80, pero también está muy influida por grandes del jazz como Billie Holiday. Su verdadero nombre es Erica Abi Wright, cursó estudios en una escuela de arte, y años después estuvo un tiempo dedicada a la docencia, hasta que en 1994 apareció en un show de D'Angelo. El manager de D'angelo, Kedar Massenburg, quedó impresionado por la actuación y la contrató para hacer una versión a dúo del tema de Marvin Gaye y Tammi Terrel "Your Precious Love".

Tamia

Tamia Marilyn Hill (born May 9, 1975), known professionally as Tamia, is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose music spans several genres: R&B, neo soul, hip hop soul, pop, gospel, jazz, and soft rock. She is best known for her first Top 40 hit on the R&B charts "You Put A Move On My Heart", her 2001 hit "Stranger in My House", Fabolous' 2003 hit "Into You" (which samples her 1998 song "So into You"), her 2006 hit "Me" and her 2012 hit "Beautiful Surprise". Tamia is married to retired NBA player Grant Hill. They have two daughters; Myla Grace and Lael Rose.

 

  

 

 

 

Joss Stone

Jocelyn Eve Stoker, (11 de abril de 1987), más conocida por su nombre artístico Joss Stone, es una destacada cantante y compositora inglesa de soul, R&B y blues, famosa por su expresiva y emotiva voz de mezzo-soprano.

Saltó a la fama después de la edición de su disco debut multi-platino y nominado al Mercury Prize, The Soul Sessions, de 2003, grabado mientras contaba tan sólo 16 años, el cual consiste en versiones de canciones de algunas de sus más importantes influencias musicales. 

 

  

 

 

Adina Howard

Adina Howard (nacida el 14 de noviembre de 1974 en Grand Rapids, Míchigan) es una cantante y rapera. Hizo su debut con el álbum Do You Wanna Ride?, cuyo primer single fue "Freak Like Me", puesto a la venta en 1995 y alcanzando importantes ventas. El tema "Freak Like Me", como la imagen de Howard se puede describir como hiper-sexual. Podemos decir que Adina abrió la puerta a que las raperas femeninas incluyeran contenido sexual explícito en sus letras. Su segundo álbum, "Welcome to Fantasy Island" (titulado en un principio "Portrait Of A Lady"), tuvo una crítica muy favorable.
